Smallcakes: PB & J and Strawberry Cream Cupcakes
This is probably the third time I’ve raved about this cupcakery. I have yet to try all their flavors. I went to visit just last Thursday and was able to take my friend, Pam to have her first sample of their cupcakes. She got a lemon one while I got the peanut butter & jelly and strawberry cream cupcakes.
Just look at the strawberry cream cupcake. The texture of the cake was just right, super moist, not too sweet. I may have wanted a firmer cake though. My cupcake fell apart once I cut it in half to share. Both cake and frosting were strawberry flavored. The frosting complimented the cake really well, but it was a little too sweet for me. I probably should have stuck the cupcake into the fridge before I ate it so the flavors weren’t highly concentrated. Still delicious nonetheless.
Presentation was not too bad. The ratio for frosting to cake was perfect. I liked that the frosting was piped a little differently from the other cupcakes. I love that the pink frosting wasn’t an unnatural pink, I would have been really put off by it. The strawberry gave it a nice touch, but unfortunately they oxidized and shrunk a little from being on display for customers. I’d prefer natural tasting strawberries though since some bakeries like to glaze their fruits for it to stay intact. This cupcake tasted just like strawberry Yan Yan Cookies which was a bonus in my book! This would be a great cupcake for those who have a super sweet tooth. Comparable to the strawberry cupcakes from Sprinkles. It would be excellent with a glass of milk or a cup of tea.
The peanut butter and jelly cupcake was my favorite between the two. I have a soft spot for anything peanut butter. I know lots of people may have peanut allergies or aren’t too familiar with super nutty tasting baked goods. The surprise here is that the frosting takes all the credit for the peanut butter. It is frosted on top of a vanilla cake and drizzled with strawberry preserves. The cake here was firmer than the strawberry cake and definitely had more body with the peanut butter frosting.
My favorite part of biting into this was the strawberry jam filling. It surprisingly wasn’t too sweet because the peanut butter had a hint of salt so it balanced out perfectly. You can just taste your childhood of the hundreds of PB & J sandwiches that your mom made you. It got really old before but eating a reincarnated version of it in a cupcake was a treat. I’m still salivating thinking about it. I really wish I could have had a glass of milk on the side with this cupcake but unfortunately I’m lactose intolerant. Soy milk just doesn’t cut it, man.
Overall these two cupcakes are a great asset to the many flavors that Smallcakes provides on a weekly basis. You can only get the PB & J cupcake twice a week so look out for those dates on their cupcake schedule card. The strawberry cream cupcake it probably a lot more popular so you’ll be able to grab one more often. I’m sad I missed out on their holiday flavors, but hopefully something new will pop up. I’ve been curious about their Drumstick cupcake which sounds like a hit on Yelp.
