"I ate a whole garden today."
It’s true, after looking at how sad my “funds” has been lately, I need to start quitting all that spending on food. I have such a bad habit of eating out at restaurants whenever I get the chance. Come to think of it, I always feel better when I eat at home anyway. It’s cleaner and I spend less money. I won’t give up restaurant dining, I just need to get a break...

The Rice Cooker Revolution →
I don’t know why I didn’t invest in cooking more with just my rice cooker. I should start soon, especially if I want to cook on a budget. I found a recipe to make steel cut oatmeal in it, I’m going to try it tonight!

"What's helicopter toast?"
I backtracked and read some old blog posts and found an entry about bread. I said I was excited to have two loaves of bread and made “helicopter toast” with sun dried tomato hummus. What in the world is helicopter toast? Even Google has no idea what I typed. Weird.

"I would like buttered toast, please."
I know it’s bad to say but I’m craving the taste of butter on a warm piece of bread. After making cookie bars over the weekend, I really want to tackle baking from scratch again. I made white bread 2 years ago and haven’t really practiced. Maybe the new project could be cinnamon buns or biscuits? My hunt for a cheap rolling pin was over after the 3rd store on Saturday. Or...

(Amateur) Food Photography
Note to self, I need to get white plates so the photo focuses on the food, not the crazy geometric designs surrounding the target. And for better lighting, I should start taking pictures of my food outside.

Frozen Milk Fats
I know that frozen yogurt is made from milk, not cream and is lower in fats. Either way, it does contain milk fats and it is somewhat churned into a delicious frozen ensemble, ready for the taking. Every 3 weeks or so my taste buds insist on switching up the obsession factor on different parts of the food pyramid. Once it was purely meats (and other proteins), another time it was blueberries, a...

Amped Atmosphere, Higher Levels of Consumption →
The Daily Beast posted an article about how some restaurants are able to trick you into eating and drinking more. The trick? A crowded restaurant with loud noises or music as George Prochnik explains in this interview. And we thought it was only high fructose corn syrup that could deceive us.

Love equals food, heartlessness equals no food
“If you don’t have the ability to make and give food away to your loved ones, you’re heartless.”
My family means it when I say that. Food is everything to us. I don’t think it’s just the European way with sharing food, but in our culture, it’s what keeps us together. Even if you’re not at the family dinner table, the mothers of the family will...

"It's like a raindance, but for my tastebuds..."
So in my 4 years in Irvine, I still have yet to venture out of my comfort zone when it comes to types of cuisine. I know it’s (somewhat) diverse, but where can I find non-sushi-burger-pasta-Thai-cafe-vegetarian-fast food type of food around here? In the Bay Area you have your Pakistani, Indian, Persian, Mediterranean, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, you-name-it-we-got-it foods. So...

(Food) blog hoarder
I have a horrible habit of finding food blogs (weekly). If you have a RSS feed like Google Reader, you can see why I’m guilty of suddenly stumbling upon a new baking or savory food blog. Tastespotting mostly does it for me. The food porn they post up there is just too enticing not to click on. Once you click on that delicious piece of art, they’ll link you to a foodie blog. In the...

Substitute me! →
If you always find yourself lost in a recipe when you don’t have that special cream of tartar or marzipan, you can use this chart that recipetips.com has for ingredient substitutions. Thank goodness for the power of Googling.

Baked Donuts →
It almost sounds like an oxymoron. Aren’t donuts usually fried? Not this recipe! Megan Myers of Stetted posted a recipe for deliciously baked strawberry donuts. I’m not a huge fan of donuts myself, but I do love strawberries!

What's in season?
After watching “Food, Inc.” I never want to go after anything that’s supposedly grocery approved. I have yet to watch “Supersize Me”. You should have watched how altered a chicken is with hormones! Or how quickly scandals of E coli in meats and vegetables can affect the country. Go for free range and organic stuff if you can. There’s really no avoiding the...

Caramel Soy Latte
The guy that made my latte this morning made a flower on top with the caramel. I thought that was sort of cute. Lewis thought the barista was hitting on me, then wondered if I could convince the guy to give me a free coffee.
