"Desserts for breakfast, anyone?" →
The New York Times posted an article about nutrition research involving desserts with breakfast in the mornings. Believe it or not, the group that consumed dessert (and protein) with their breakfast in the morning lost more weight than the group that went with the low-carb diet after a follow up of 16 weeks. Sounds like you just need a balance of the three— protein, carbs, and some sugar. ...

Totally Rad Show (Valentine’s Day Edition)
I have been watching this show with Lewis for as long as I can remember! These guys are a hilarious trio that talk about movies, video games, TV, and comics. Here’s a new favorite. The guys decide to make red velvet whoopie pies for their significant other. This is how I would imagine baking would be like when things get crazy in the...

Cako Cupcakes
I promise you I’m not hunting for cupcakes on a weekly basis! I’ve been lazy with posting my reviews. Diane and I stopped by for cupcakes in Downtown SF during a holiday shopping trip. It was cold outside and the trip was exhausting. There’s just too many people out! We were getting hungry and the logical idea was to get cupcakes! No it’s really not, but we caved...

900 Grayson
We may not have a Roscoe’s House of Chicken Waffles here, but we do have 900 Grayson right here in the East Bay in Berkeley! I have toyed with the idea of eating this sweet and savory dish but never gotten around to trying it until last month. Chicken and waffles has to be one of the better marriages since sea salt and caramel.

2 Years Old!
(Note: Unfortunately I did not bake a cake for this occasion, but I did for my 2 year anniversary with Lewis back in 2009. This was a strawberry and cream cake.)
My blog is officially 2 years old! It turned two on January 18! It didn’t even occur to me that it’s been this long since I’ve had On Top of the Food Chain until I was going through my archives and found my very...

Another New Layout
And I just spent the last hour hunting for a cleaner layout for this blog. The font sizes are just about right, it looks more professional, there are widgets, and my personal favorite, there’s a share button! Yes!
I never got a chance to thank my readers for your support; although I only know there’s about 8-10 of you. I still really appreciate your support and enthusiasm and...

Couscous
One of my favorite ways to unwind is grocery shop. It’s a mundane and sometimes painful experience for some people, but I love it. I’ve grown fond of anything food related and can’t wait to take my time to find the next popular item on the shelves, preferably healthy, organic, or raw. Anything to liven up a dish.
I realized my diet has been very plain. The grains I usually...

Smallcakes: PB & J and Strawberry Cream Cupcakes
This is probably the third time I’ve raved about this cupcakery. I have yet to try all their flavors. I went to visit just last Thursday and was able to take my friend, Pam to have her first sample of their cupcakes. She got a lemon one while I got the peanut butter & jelly and strawberry cream cupcakes.
Just look at the strawberry cream cupcake. The texture of the cake was just...

Updated, sort of.
Changed my layout back to the simple orange one. Back to the classic from when I started this blog almost 2 years ago.

I try all the things!
Smallcakes Employee: Do you know what cupcake you want yet?
Me: Not yet...I can't decide.
Smallcakes Employee: Well have you tried any of our flavors?
Me: ...Uh. I've actually tried all the flavors a while ago.
Smallcakes Employee: Really?! Which one is your favorite?
Me: It's between the lemon, banana cream, and chocolate cream. My sister and I bought a dozen of your mini cupcakes so we tried all the flavors that you guys offered on Sunday.
Smallcakes Employee: Wow, even I haven't tried all the flavors. Everyone says to try the lemon one though!
Me: Yeah...I guess I'll have the chocolate cream today.

Smallcakes Cupcakery
I was a little too excited when I saw a sign for cupcakes in Fremont! It was peeking out from the plaza across Pacific Commons and I told myself I’d make a trip when I had time. After a lazy morning of contemplating the gym, I grabbed coffee with my sister instead and swung by the bakery. Salted caramel hot chocolate and cupcakes in the morning, yes please!
Diane and I were too...

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate! →
Dearest people of Tumblr,
I’ve searched for tags of “caramel hot chocolate” and found only about 9 posts of pictures of this beverage and one link to a recipe. That’s disappointing. I’m going to up that search result to 10. Alice from Savory Sweet Life introduced an amazingly simple recipe to use at home for this warm and cozy drink. I had a salted caramel hot...

Carrot Cake Love
I was one of those weird kids that requested carrot cake over chocolate cake for special occasions. Cream cheese is amazing! What can I say? For a while I thought cream cheese was only carrot cake’s territory, little did I know it paired so well with other flavors and food such as red velvet cake and chocolate. All good and more to love!
A few weeks ago my parents helped me car shop...
